No field is more prone to scams than weight loss.  And now, unscrupulous companies are putting questionable ingredients in transdermal patches.  Just slap the patch on your skin, and the patch will deliver the “weight loss” ingredients through your skin and into your blood.  Voila, the body you’ve always wanted.

Garcinia cambogia, apple cider vinegar, Coleus forskohlli.  The list of ingredients is endless.  Rather than review all the weight loss patches (an impossible job), we’re going to focus on the Thrive DFT Patch from Le-Vel.  It’s the most searched for patch.

First of all, you should know that Thrive DFT is part of a multi-level marketing scheme.  This way of doing business is so shady that Facebook won’t even let you advertise MLM products.

Second, Le-Vel doesn’t promote Thrive DFT by itself.  From their website – “When taken as part of the THRIVE 8-Week Experience—in conjunction with the THRIVE Premium Lifestyle Capsules and the THRIVE Premium Lifestyle Shake Mix—DFT promotes clean and healthy weight management.”

To buy Thrive DFT, you have to connect with a Thrive Promoter.  To get to a Promoter, it’s necessary to fill out a lengthy questionnaire on the Le-Vel website.  Your Promoter can pitch the products to you.

It’s not just Thrive DFT, the Premium Lifestyle Capsules, and the Premium Lifestyle Shake.  I counted 22 other products on their website that they can sell you as an upsell.  And you can be sure that your Promoter is looking to sell them to you.

What’s the cost of all of this?  You can’t get the numbers on the website, and I did not hook up with a Promoter.  Scanning the internet, I found monthly recurring costs of $300.  Other customers who bought various upsells claim to have paid as much as $800.

What are the ingredients?  There are six ingredients in Thrive DFT.  Three of them – Coenzyme Q 10, White Willow Bark, and Cosmoperine -have no reputed effects on weight loss.

The other three ingredients – ForsLean (a member of the mint family), Green Coffee Bean Extract, and Garcinia Cambogia – are alleged to help you lose weight.  These three ingredients have had limited clinical trials.  The trials that exist show no consistent effects of any of these ingredients on weight loss.

Furthermore, the FDA does not have to approve these products.  The FDA treats them as health supplements, and before their release, they are not subject to the same rigorous testing that drugs are.

The Direct Selling Self-Regulatory Council (DSSRC) has issued a case decision finding that Le-Vel and its distributors were making inappropriate health claims about the Thrive product line.

As far as the FDA goes, we have this – “FDA is aware that some transdermal vitamin patches are being falsely marketed as dietary supplements; the agency considers this action to be health fraud,” said Jeremy Kahn, an FDA spokesman. “Generally, FDA considers any patch product that is promoted as a dietary supplement to be an unapproved new drug and a misbranded drug.”

All in all, I can’t recommend Thrive DFT.  In fact, I can’t recommend other patches for weight loss unless they have been studied rigorously and approved by the FDA.
