If you decided that diet and weight loss weren’t cutting it for you, you might have gone to a medical weight loss center. If you did, the chances are good that you got a prescription for Phentermine. It also goes by the names Adipex-P, Lomaira, and Suprenza.
Just how good is this drug? Is it the Holy Grail? Should you take it?
I hope to answer these questions in this article and give you some more information along the way.
Phentermine is an amphetamine-like drug. It’s categorized as a Class IV drug because of its potential for abuse and addiction. Not surprisingly, it’s a prescription medication. It works by suppressing appetite.
Side-effects are pretty common, especially at doses used for weight loss. Most frequently, people complain of feeling “jittery” and “jumpy.” But other side effects are also relatively common. These include:
- Increased heart rate
- Tingling or prickling feeling in hands or feet
- Dry mouth
- Sleeplessness
- Nervousness
- Constipation
It’s also possible to overdose on Phentermine with all of these symptoms in an extreme form. Rare fatalities occur.
You shouldn’t take it if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, an overactive thyroid, or glaucoma.
Like amphetamine, you can develop tolerance to Phentermine in three to six weeks. That means that it stops working on your appetite. If you develop tolerance, it’s best to stop the drug rather than chasing higher and higher doses.
On the bright side, Phentermine does work in weight loss. You can take it for only twelve weeks. During that time, the expected weight loss is 5% of your body weight, though 10% weight loss can occur. If you’re 200 pounds, that’s 10 to 20 pounds.
It may work better when combined with another drug, Topiramate. This combination is sold under the brand name Qsymia. In this combination, the drug is approved for a year’s usage. In one study, patients lost an average of 21.6 pounds after a year of Qsymia.
So, is Phentermine for you. For one thing, it works. But it has a lot of side effects that occur pretty often. It also can be habit-forming. It’s up to you whether you want to take the risk.
On the other hand, you can take the Vivesse HCG Program. Side-effects are minimal. You can lose twenty pounds in six weeks. If that sounds good to you, make an appointment with one of our HCG specialists, and learn more about it. Just call us at 860-286-8000.
